Accomplishments

Melanie Campbell has completed re-certification with the American Culinary Federation four times, which includes 80 continuing education requirements each time along with continued work in the field of culinary arts. Selected as one of the “Top 5 Chefs” in West Virginia for sustainable efforts by Executive Magazine of West Virginia, Campbell has won and judged numerous culinary competitions. She recently attended the annual West Virginia Tourism Day at the Capitol and served as guest chef at the Annual Legislative Reception at the Culture Center. Campbell also has participated in 4-H Camp as an instructor with youth and young adult/teens and has served as a judge for culinary projects.

Research Interests/Professional Activities

Dr. Carter serves on numerous committees at the College, including the Executive committee, Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure committee, and the Chair of the Professional Affairs Committee, as well as serving three consecutive one-year terms as Chair of the Faculty Assembly.  Dr. Carter has been an active member of the strategic planning committee for the College and has been a member of the President’s Leadership Council. She has worked with many non-profit groups in the Elkins community including serving as a board member of Woodlands Community Lenders, past President of Elkins Main Street, and as past President and current Commissioner of the Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission.  She is also a member of the West Virginia Academic Business Program Leaders Group, consisting of all Business Deans and Chairs from both public and private universities and colleges across the state.  She serves as a consultant,  providing technical assistance for start-ups and small businesses in areas of writing business plans and strategic planning.

Accomplishments

Dr. Carter has received numerous honors and awards, including the Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award, a peer-nominated and elected award at LSU; Entrepreneurship 101 Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Field of Business Creativity and Entrepreneurship by the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education; and Excellence in Entrepreneurship from Syracuse University. She earlier served on the Board of the Governor’s Conference for Economic Development for Louisiana Governor Mike Foster and Governor Kathleen Blanco.

Publications

Dr. Carter served as co-lead author of “EntreLA,” an entrepreneurship curriculum commissioned by the Louisiana State Board of Education to teach entrepreneurship to juniors and seniors in Louisiana’s public high schools. The curriculum was approved for use by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and is currently being taught in public high schools throughout the state.

Additional Info

Extending her expertise to other areas of the College, Dr. Carter worked closely with Director of The Naylor Canter Mary Ellen Schubert to help design and interdisciplinary degree for a Supported Learning Program business major. She also works closely with the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education to assure re-accreditation of business programs at the College.
